51 years ago, on April 11, 1965, the United States Road Racing Championship held the last of three races, run from 1963-65, on a 3 mile temporary road circuit on then dormant runways and taxiways of NTCT Corry Field in Pensacola, Florida. The 67 lap, 200 mile race was won by George Follmer—of Indy Car, Formula 1 and NASCAR fame—in 2hr:11min:05sec piloting a Porsche powered Lotus for an average speed of 92 miles/hr. Other entrants of note in the race were Jim Hall and Hap Sharp piloting their innovative Chaparral 2A’s, and Peter Greg—of Daytona 24 Hour fame—in a Porsche 904GTS. Other notable makes entered included Shelby Cobra’s, Cooper Monaco’s, various makes of Porsche’s and Lotus’s, Alfa Romeos TI’s and other lesser known makes.

Previous race winners and makes included Roger Penske—no introduction necessary—who won the first race in 1963 in a Ferrari 250 GTO and Ken Miles—who would later go on to when the Daytona 24 Hours and the 12 Hours of Sebring—in a Shelby Cobra.

Other famous racer's such as Jackie Stewart and Briggs Cunningham competed occasionally in the series which went on to become the Can Am championship in 1969.

My mom—one month pregnant with me—and my dad were there for the race and regular attendees.
